Provides protection under four coverage parts. Liability coverage is a single limit (some companies optionally offer split limits). Medical payments covers expenses incurred within three years. Uninsured motorists’ coverage is available and underinsured motorists coverage may be added by endorsement. Physical damage coverage is a single insuring agreement, with collision loss included if specified.
A customizing equipment coverage endorsement is designed to extend physical damage insurance on a stated amount basis, to custom installations and modifications in and on vans, panel trucks and pickups. Endorsements are available for motorcycles, motor homes, snowmobiles and other recreational type vehicles.
Coverage may be extended by endorsement for limited car use in Mexico provided liability insurance is purchased through a licensed Mexican insurance company. A personal auto policy may be written for a named non-owner.
What does your Auto Insurance Policy Cover?
There are several parts to an auto insurance policy. Each has a separate purpose and price, and may be bought in different amounts.
Bodily Injury & Property Damage Liability
This coverage protects drivers of your car if the car injures or kills other people or damages their property. The minimum Wisconsin limits your policy must provide are $25,000/$50,000/$10,000. This is $25,000 for each person, $50,000 total bodily injury liability, and $10,000 property damage liability for each accident. Some companies sell a single limit of liability with a minimum of $60,000. This is the total payable for any accident. You might want to purchase more than the minimum coverage required by law. Our agents can advise you in deciding how much protection you need.
Uninsured Motorist
This is a personal injury protection to you and your passengers if you are in an accident caused by an uninsured motorist or a hit-and-run driver. It does not include damage to property. Every policy that includes bodily injury liability must include this coverage. Wisconsin law requires uninsured motorist coverage of $25,000/$50,000 for bodily injury only.
Underinsured Motorist
This is an optional coverage which increases the personal injury protection to you and the people in your car up to the amount of coverage you purchase. It becomes effective when the party causing an accident has lower limits than you purchase and the accident costs more. Most underinsured motorist coverage’s bring the amount payable up to the amount purchased. This coverage typically does not “add” the amount you purchased to the amount available form the person causing the accident. Insurers are required to notify policyholders who do not have UIM coverage of its availability. The minimum limits of UIM coverage, if accepted after notification, are $50,000 per person and $100,000 per accident.
Medical Expense
This provides medical or funeral expenses for you or others injured or killed in an accident while riding or driving in your car. It also covers you and members of your family hit by a car or injured while riding in another car. Medical payments insurance usually covers only expenses not covered by health insurance, such as co-payments, deductibles, etc. Medical expense coverage is usually sold as a single amount such as $1,000. Companies must offer this coverage but you do not have to buy it.
Comprehensive
This protects your car against almost all damage except loss caused by collision. This includes fire, theft, missiles, glass breakage, falling objects, explosion, earthquake, civil commotion or colliding with a wild bird or animal. It is based upon the actual cash value of the car and can be written with a deductible.
Collision
This protects your car if it collides with an object, including another car, or if it overturns. Your own insurer pays for such damage even if the collision is your fault. Limits are based on the actual cash value of your car, and it is usually written with a deductible of $100 or more. In addition, collision premiums are based on the make and model year of your car.
You should evaluate the current market value of your car and your ability to afford a similar car should it be destroyed before you purchase this coverage. You may not need the coverage if your car has decreased in value or if you can afford to replace it.

Antique and classic automobile insurance
The care and maintenance of antique automobiles is becoming a popular pastime among Americans of every age. Practically every weekend in the spring, summer and fall months there are gatherings, parades and tours for antique autos sponsored by antique automobile clubs. These cars are worth a substantial amount of money, depending on their age, availability, and the type of model. The owner’s expense in restoration often can equal their actual worth.
An antique automobile is defined in the automobile rate manual as:
- a motor vehicle of the private passenger type
- more than 25 years old; maintained solely for use in exhibitions, club activities, parades and other functions of public interest; and occasionally used for other purposes
- It may not be used primarily for the transportation of passengers or goods.
Liability rates are generally much less than the manual liability rate. Physical damage coverage’s are insured on a stated amount basis. Generally the policy covers all risks of physical loss or damage to the car from external causes (comprehensive) subject to a small deductible.
Homeowners & Renters Insurance

CONDOMINIUM
The major branches of protection under this policy include personal property, personal liability, and theft. Personal Property typically covers personal property including the contents of your condo and other personal items owned by you or family members who live with you. This protection can be based on actual cash value or replacement cost.
Condo insurance policies may provide limited coverage for small boats; however, most Condo insurance policies do not cover motorized vehicles unless they are unlicensed and used only at your home. Some items may have coverage limits such as firearms, artwork, business property, electronic data, jewelry, and money. Extra coverage is usually available by adding endorsements to your policy.
Personal Liability section provides personal liability coverage against a claim or lawsuit resulting from bodily injury or property damage to others caused by an accident on your property or as a result of your personal activities anywhere. This coverage does not provide protection for auto and business related incidents. This coverage protects you and all family members who live with you. Theft covers higher priced items such as firearms, jewelry, silverware, money, and electronic equipment up to a specified amount within the policy.
RENTERS INSURANCE
Package of property and liability coverage’s designed to protect apartment or dwelling renters. Although renters do not own the building, physical damage losses could occur to owned contents, and liability coverage is needed for personal and premises exposures. It is a self-contained package with endorsements available to add or increase coverage’s, much the same as a homeowner’s policy.

Long Term Care insurance is protection that is bought in advance to protect your assets against the possible need for 24 hour home health care, assisted living, or nursing home care.

Definitions within a policy
Daily Benefit Amount: The maximum amount paid by the policy per day, during the benefit period.
Benefit Period: The amount of time that the insurance company will pay the benefit. This time period can range from 1-6 years or have a lifetime benefit, which will pay for the time from elimination period until the individual no longer needs the coverage.
Elimination Period: This will vary between companies but range from 0-120 days. This is the waiting period from when assisted care is needed until policy payments begin.
Inflation Protection: This option increases the benefit limits by a specified % each year to offset the increased medical costs so the daily benefit amount is sufficient in the future.

- Hospitalization insurance
- Major medical expense insurance
- Accident insurance
- Health insurance
- Income insurance
MAJOR MEDICAL EXPENSE INSURANCE
May be planned to apply at the point where basic hospitalization insurance ends. A selected limit of, for example, $1 million, $2 million, or even unlimited, is subject to a deductible of, for example, $500. The insurer generally pays a percentage of costs between the deductible and the maximum aggregate, such as 80%.
HOSPITALIZATION INSURANCE
Provides indemnity for room and board, general hospital expenses and surgical operation expense for clearly stated limits. Limits vary according to premium paid. Policies may be written for individuals or entire families. Group plans arranged by businesses for employees are similar in scope.
DISABILITY INCOME INSURANCE
Accident and sickness insurance, not to be confused with hospitalization insurance, is usually available only to those working for an earned income. It provides monthly income for disability resulting from accident or sickness.
HEALTH INSURANCE
Group plans, sponsored by the employer or organization for the benefit of employees or members, are widely available as an important fringe benefit. Individual policies may be arranged when appropriate. Premiums for this coverage are paid in whole or in part by the employer. The employer may not discriminate in offering coverage to employees. All must be offered the coverage. Employees may elect to add family members, at an additional cost, most often paid by the employee.
